The idea for Promiscuous Stories originated with the author whose essay inspired the creation of The Plagiarists in the first place. Jonathan Lethem launched “The Promiscuous Materials Project” in the spirit of sharing art and creative freedom, making a number of his writings available to adapt for a negligible fee. The Plagiarists have chosen some of these stories to adapt into an evening of theatre called Promiscuous Stories.
The full-length production of Promiscuous Stories will be approximately two hours in length and feature seven adaptations of different Lethem stories. Each will be a short play in itself, inhabiting its own reality and performed in its own style, but sharing common scenic elements to emphasize the unique world these stories all share. Props or furniture may take on special meaning in one piece, and then carry that meaning into the next piece. Ideas and philosophies presented in one story may be specifically supported or challenged in the next. Characters form one piece may appear in comic books or on television in another piece. This combination of cohesiveness and variety allows us to explore the ideas found in the stories from different angles and contexts. We feel this is both a big-tent theatre event with enormous popular potential and a unique, intelligent work of collaborative art.
